Southeast Rack Depot installs pallet racking for warehouses and distribution spaces in the Atlanta area. We also sell new and used racks, so you can buy and install through one company.
What you need to know first: A pallet rack is only as safe as its installation. Level, anchoring, correct parts, and clear load signs all matter. Before you hire anyone, confirm your slab, your loads, and whether your city or county requires a permit. This page explains each of those, then shows how to get a quote.
What a proper pallet rack installation includes
Installation quality varies a lot between companies. A good job usually covers these steps:
- Review the plan. The crew checks the layout, aisle widths, rack heights, and the loads you plan to store.
- Check the floor. Rack frames are anchored to the slab, so the concrete’s condition and thickness matter.
- Assemble the frames and beams. Parts must match, and beams must lock in correctly.
- Level and plumb the rack. Frames should stand straight and true. Out-of-plumb racks lose strength.
- Anchor to the slab. Anchor type and placement should follow the rack manufacturer’s or engineer’s specifications.
- Add accessories. Wire decks, row spacers, and column or end-of-aisle guards, where they apply.
- Post load capacity signs. Each rack system should show its rated capacity.
- Walk through the finished job. You should see the finished rack and know its limits before you load it.
Things to settle before installation day
Your floor and anchoring
Anchor bolts are what keep a loaded rack from shifting or tipping. The rack standard says anchor design must follow ACI 318 Chapter 17, which is why slab thickness and strength matter. Tell your installer about any cracks, patched areas, or post-tension slabs early.
Load capacity
Know what you’ll store: pallet weight, how many pallets per level, and how high. Rack capacity depends on frame and beam size, not only on how strong the rack looks. Racks should show their rated loads on plaques or labels. The RMI’s rack standard calls for load plaques on or near the rack system.
Permits and fire code
This is the step most likely to delay a project. Rack permits are generally required once storage equipment passes 8 feet in height, and building departments often won’t release the permit until the fire department approves high-piled storage. The City of Atlanta has published guidance pointing to a commodity affidavit and a high-piled storage racking permit form as part of the process.
Rules differ between Atlanta and surrounding counties and can change, so always confirm with your local building and fire authority before you order. Ask any installer, including us, whether permit paperwork is part of the job or your responsibility.
Layout and forklift access
Aisle width, turning room, and sprinkler clearance should be decided before racks go up, not after. If you don’t have a plan yet, see our warehouse racking layout design service.
Why installation quality matters for safety
Rack failures are expensive and dangerous. The main design standard, ANSI MH16.1, is referenced by the International Building Code for safe design and installation of industrial steel storage racks. An installer who follows the manufacturer’s drawings and that standard is protecting your people, your inventory, and your insurance position.
Safety continues after installation. Basic rack checks look at whether the rack is plumb and straight, visibly rusted, overloaded, or damaged. A formal inspection by a qualified person is commonly recommended at least once a year, and forklift strikes on uprights should be checked right away.
New or used pallet racks?
We sell both. Used rack can lower your upfront cost, but it needs closer checking:
- Inspect for bent uprights, damaged beams, rust, and weld or connector damage.
- Make sure frames and beams are the same style and compatible.
- Get the capacity confirmed for your actual layout. A used rack’s rating doesn’t automatically transfer to a new configuration.
If you aren’t sure, ask us to help you choose before you buy. Browse our products or see the financing options.
What affects the cost and timeline of installation
We don’t quote a price without seeing the job, because these factors change it:
- Number of frames, beams, and bays
- Rack height and pallet weights
- Condition and type of the floor
- New versus used, and any accessories
- Whether the building is empty or in use
- Permit and fire-code requirements
- Access and your target completion date
The fastest way to get an accurate quote is to send us a rough layout or sketch, the rack type, the quantity, and your timeline.

Pallet rack installation FAQs
How much does pallet rack installation cost in Atlanta?
It depends on the size and complexity of the job, not a flat rate. Rack height, quantity, floor condition, accessories, and permit requirements all change the price. Send us your details for a quote.
Do I need a permit to install pallet racks in Atlanta?
Often yes, especially for taller racks and high-piled storage, but the rules depend on your location and height. Confirm with the local building and fire authority before you start.
Do pallet racks need to be anchored to the floor?
Typically yes. Anchoring keeps racks stable under load and impact, and the anchor design should follow the manufacturer’s or engineer’s specifications and the rack standard.
What load signs do racks need?
Racks should display their rated capacity on plaques or labels. If you change the rack configuration, the capacity can change too, and the signs may need to be updated.
How often should racks be inspected?
Do regular visual checks in-house and arrange a formal inspection by a qualified person at least yearly. Inspect any rack after a forklift impact.
Can you install racks I bought elsewhere?
It depends on the brand, condition, and available drawings. Send us the details with your quote request.
