Warehouse racking: Do’s and Don’ts

Spread the love

If you’re looking for warehouse pallet racking systems for the first time, consider the most frequent mistakes that companies make in their warehouses beforehand. The following are warehouse-racking mistakes  that we frequently run into and try to steer clear of for our clients in order to lessen the possibility of costly damages or dangers in their warehouses.

Dos

  • Purchase the right size: The size of your racking can become a significant problem if forklifts cannot access the upper levels of your warehouse pallet racking. Make sure you have a forklift that can access every pallet before installing a tall racking system to prevent problems.
  • Proper inspection: Numerous factors, such as the weight of the items being stored, the loading technique, and others, can cause storage rack damage. Therefore, it is crucial to regularly check your storage racks and attached guard panels and repair or replace them as necessary.
  • Install safety guards: This is yet another crucial aspect of industrial rack safety. Protective guards can be installed to safeguard both your employees and your inventory.

Don’ts

  • Don’t ignore forklift damage: A small ding or bend brought on by a forklift may seem inconsequential. However, the damage might be worse and more costly if a forklift strikes the same location again.
  • Don’t exceed capacities: Overloading the advised limit could weaken the pallet racking system over time and make it fall apart, especially in an earthquake. This oversight and negligence could endanger your employees and cause very expensive damage.
  • Keep in mind the height-to-depth ratio: There should never be a height-to-depth ratio greater than 6:1. This means that your racking system’s height shouldn’t ever be greater than six times its depth, so that it won’t cause any warehouse racking problems. Your pallet racking system becomes less stable and more likely to collapse when this ratio is exceeded.

Warehouse racking mistakes you need to avoid

Below are some of the few warehouse racking mistakes to avoid :

  • Incompatible: One of the most frequent warehouse racking mistakes is buying pallet racking that isn’t compatible with the company’s goods, the warehouse, the vehicles, or the existing pallets. When buying racking, take into account the materials you’ll be storing, the amount of space you have for it, and the kind of forklift you’ll be using.
  • Buying cheap or subpar used pallet racking: Not all suppliers of used pallet racking can be trusted, even though some are reputable and offer high-quality used racking systems. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is, as with most things. Make sure the supplier can offer you a guarantee if you have any concerns about the product’s quality.
  • Inadequate pallet racking protection: Damage from improper loading, inadequate racking protection, or forklifts striking the racking frames or shelves are all frequent occurrences. We strongly advise adding protection, such as end wrap barriers, post protection, and load signs, to prevent misuse and overloading.
  • Failing to prepare for future growth: If you want to expand your company, you should also think about expanding your racking system. It is frequently less expensive and time-consuming to buy additional racks to provide flexibility and guarantee that all of your racks are compatible with one another.
  • Lack of proactive maintenance and repairs: Pallet racking systems frequently go without maintenance and repairs. Racking is vulnerable to damage from things like vehicle collisions and overloading, and if problems are not fixed right away, they may become unsafe or irreparable.
