Why is wire decking beneficial in pallet racking?
Wire decking is a common pallet racking accessory made from a metal mesh designed to fit securely between the front and rear rack beams. It forms a foundation for placing inventory, most often non-palletized products, cases, and cartons as a safety measure on pallet racks preventing items from falling through the rack structure. With wire mesh decking you only need to be concerned when storing non-evenly distributed loads, point loads or loads where the weight comes down on a point in your wirehouse installation.
The mesh design has U-shaped channel or flared supports to support the load that allows water and light to pass through vs. solid surface products and comes in various thicknesses and mesh dimensions.
There are various types of accessories for pallet racking but why wire decking? Here are some points to help you understand the benefits of wire decking for pallet racking:
- Offers extra support and reduces the risk of falling materials to your racking systems.
- More dependable than solid plywood or particle board decks.
- Improves sprinkler efficiency in a fire by preventing burning pallets.
- Available in galvanized material which helps resist rust and corrosion.
- Increases inventory visibility from all levels on the rack system.
- Easy to install.
- Improves versatility in pallet rack storage.

Advantages of wire decking in pallet rack
Wire mesh decking offers many advantages over other types of decking such as vented decking or hardwoods. Following are some of the advantages of wire decking in pallet rack:
- Water Resistant: Wire mesh decking offers a long lasting and durable investment in supporting pallets and their loads as wire decking has a lot more wear- resistance compared to other alternatives. Wire decking is often composed of galvanized material which reduces the chances of forklifts or pallets causing damage to the decking and can withstand stress and strain.
- No cutting needed: One of the many reasons why people prefer wire decking is it doesn’t need cutting whereas wood requires cutting to size and can only fit between step beams. Wire decking is always precut to your specific requirements before leaving from the wire decking manufacturers.
- Easy to Install: Because wire decking comes pre-made to your specific requirements and measurements so that it fits perfectly into racks with ease without using tools. You just need to double check your measurements in order to hold the deck in place and prevent the beams from moving apart.
- Lower Cost: Wire decking may cost more at first but will require little to no maintenance. Unlike wire decking, the cost of cutting, installing and replacing hard wood boards over time will be much more.
- Safety: In comparison to hardwood pallet rack decks, wire decks allow your sprinkler system to work right away and effectively in case of emergency. Wire decks help prevent the contamination of products, reduce fire spread and provide better security for the racked materials. This benefits the building, your products on the pallet rack, and safety of your employees. Wire decking helps to increase the overall stability of the pallet racking system.
